Wallkill East to Host Second Annual Food Drive in Conjunction with District 7210
In April 2020, Wallkill East Rotary started The Wallkill East Rotary Adopt-A-Family Fund, a community response initiative to support families hit hard by COVID-19. Since it's inception, the fund has helped over 100 families with critical living needs and expenses.
To date, we have raised $58,083 through club funds, member donations, community grants, and Rotary District 7210 grant. Almost $50,000 has been disbursed thus far to help 115 families with different needs including rent payments, medical bills, utility bills, medical prescriptions, gas cards, and food needs. We have also continued existing partnerships and established many new ones with local community/agencies including: the Pine Bush Central School District, Mental Health Association of Orange County, St. Paul's Church (Bullville), RECAP, HONOR, Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, and The Salvation Army (Middletown).
Our club plans to continue to raise money in various ways for this initiative, including participating again this year in Hudson Valley Gives on Wednesday, May 19, 2021.

Unfortunately we are not able to have an in-person Turkey Trot this year so we're trying something a little different for 2020!
For the ENTIRE MONTH of November, you can 'REGISTER' for the Trot. For $20, you will receive a care package in the mail from Wallkill East Rotary, which will INCLUDE A RACE SHIRT! To register you can mail us a check or you can go online to www.orangeturkeytrot.com.
On Thanksgiving morning (or any day in November) run any 5K course you would like (we say make it fast and flat so you can PR. HA!) and then enter your times online.
And don't forget to take photos! Oh, how we will miss seeing all our trotters this year! Get that turkey gear on, send us your photos, and also tag us on social media! (Even if you don't technically register, we still want to see your photos!)
Sponsorship opportunities are still available!
We hope everyone is doing ok through these challenging times, above all staying safe, and we really hope to see you for a full-on Turkey Trot on November 25, 2021!

Hudson Valley Gives, a 24-hour online day of giving started by the Community Foundation of Orange & Sullivan Counties is on Wednesday, May 20th, less than FOUR hours away!
Wallkill East Rotary is participating this year to raise funds for our newly established Wallkill East Rotary Adopt-a-Family Fund. This fundprovides assistance to families in our club's service area that have been hit hard by COVID-19. Thus far, the fund has provided gift cards for food, clothing, and gas. The fund has paid hotel expenses for families that have been displaced and has made payments to utility companies so gas & electricity is not turned off on families.
The need is great and we are hoping to raise additional funds on May 20, 2020 so that we can help as many people and families as possible! Please consider visiting our Hudson Valley Gives page- https://www.hvgives.org/organizations/wallkill-east-rotary- and making a donation to the cause. Every single dollar helps our fellow community members!
Wallkill East Rotary recently started The Wallkill East Rotary Adopt-A-Family Fund, which is a community response initiative to support families hit hard by COVID-19. Our club has created a fund where distributions will help families in our Rotary service area (Town of Wallkill & Pine Bush) with critical living needs and expenses.
Initially, we have established communication with the Middletown and Pine Bush school districts to assist in identifying and prioritizing the needs of these local families. As the initiative evolves, we will be sourcing needs through other third party officials or programs. This is meant to be anonymous support and the funds we provide are in the form of gift cards or money orders/checks made out to utility companies, landlords etc. We have already helped 3 families using seed money from our club and a grant from the The Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan.
Our club plans to continue to raise money in various ways for this initiative, including participating in Hudson Valley Gives on Wednesday, May 20, 2020. Please visit www.hvgives.org to make a donation to support this initiative. The larger the fund, the more people and families we can help and support in our community!

The Wallkill East Rotary Club has completed its 13th annual dictionary distribution to third graders. This year the dictionaries were given to third graders in the Pine Bush Central School District, the Harmony Christian School, the Middletown Christian School, and the Chapel Field Christian School.
Wallkill East distributed over 400 dictionaries in our area. The Rotary club has chosen distribution of dictionaries to address one of the six primary focuses of Rotary International, which is Education and Literacy.
In the 13 years that this project has taken place, Wallkill East Rotary has given out over 4,400 dictionaries. In addition, we have provided English/Spanish dictionaries when they are needed. We receive the dictionaries from THE DICTIONARY PROJECT, which is an international project to provide dictionaries to students.
Dr. Bill Bassett, chair of the project for our club, is pictured here with some of the third grade recipients.

Logan grabs a breakfast sandwich with his mom at a local gas station each morning and noticed a man sleeping outside. He asked his mom why he was there and she explained that the man had no place to live. Logan took it upon himself to find out how he could help and Operation Socks was born!
Logan reached out to HONOR to find out what he could do and saw on their website that they serve 3,000 people a year. So what else would an 11-year old do but set out to collect 3,000 pairs of socks for all the people HONOR serves?! Wallkill East read about Logan's mission in the Times Herald Record and decided to reach out and help him reach his goal.
Sock goal met, Logan moved on to his next project. Now he is looking to collect 3,000 new or gently used towels and washcloths for HONOR. If you would like to donate please contact any Wallkill East Rotarian or reach out to Operation Socks HQ directly at https://www.facebook.com/OperationSocksHQ/
Wallkill East Rotarian and Orange County Legislature Rob Sassi recognized Logan last month for all his efforts with Operation Socks HQ.
A few years back, Wallkill East Rotary adopted Tower Drive in the Town of Wallkill. Each year since (and twice a year) we have gathered volunteers from our club to head out and pick-up garbage along the road. Safety vests, "pickers," and garbage bags are all provided by the town.
On Sunday, March 25, 2017, members of the Circleville Middle School Interact Club and Wallkill East Rotary Club participated in the Pets Alive Bowl A Thon, which raised also $5,000 for the agency. The Interact club is very active with helping this agency and Wallkill East has always supported the club's efforts. In addition to participating in the Bowl A Thon, the Interact and Rotary clubs also collected supplies for Pets Alive.

Wallkill East is a member of Rotary Region 5, which includes our neighboring clubs of Liberty, Livingston Manor, Middletown, Minisink, Monticello, Port Jervis and Shawangunk Ridge. Regularly throughout the Rotary year we all gather together to celebrate all the great things our clubs are doing and have some fun together.
At our Region 5 gathering last night, Wallkill East presented the Liberty Rotary Club with a $1,000 check for their Haiti Clean Water Project. This phenomenal project provides water filtration systems for Haitian families. The Liberty club's goal is to distribute 1,000 of these systems to 1,000 families. We are honored to help them reach their goal!
Pictured are Wallkill East Club President Sal (left) presenting the check to Liberty Club President Gary.
Wallkill East Rotary and the Pine Bush Interact Clubs stepped up big time in order for S.T.E.P (Schools To End Poverty) to reach their goal of $82,000 before June 30, 2016.
District Governor Nick Constantino made a bold promise at last years district conference to the co-founders of S.T.E.P Eddie Frank and Howard Goldin that he would promote their goal and do everything in his power to help them reach it.
In turn Wallkill East as Nick's home club promised to do everything they could to raise funds towards that goal. From that promise the Kids & Cookies concept was born.
A second coin drop at Sam's Club in Middletown and a fantastic Fund Raising effort at our annual Turkey Trot allowed Wallkill East to present S.T.E.P. a check for $5,000 at Nick's district conference putting S.T.E.P. over their goal. It was both timely and appropriate that Nick's home club put S.T.E.P. over the top at Nick's district conference.
That check combined with the first check of $2,500 brings the total contribution from Wallkill East to $7,500. Almost 10% of the total Goal!

Wallkill East Rotary assisted at The Classic 10K Road Race Weekend's event this past weekend. Rotarians worked water stop #1, which serves both the 5K and 10K races.

On Saturday May 28, 2016, the Pine Bush HS Interact Club dedicated a Peace Pole at the Town of Crawford Park. The Peace Pole is in a great spot and highly visible as you enter the park. A very big thank you to Angelo Ferrante and his colleague Matthew DeMaio who did the hard work of digging the hole on a very hot and humid day! Hopefully this is just the beginning of placing Peace Poles around our communities. There are currently about 30 Peace Poles in the Hudson Valley.
On April 5, Wallkill East Rotary presented the YMCA of Middletown with a $500 check for their Strong Kids Campaign. This campaign raises funds for financial assistance for camps, swimming lessons, and many other youth programs that the YMCA offers. Wallkill East is proud to be a continued supporter of the Strong Kids Campaign.

Wallkill East Rotary sponsored a new Interact Club this year at Circleville Middle School. The group has organized a pet drive and are in the process of collecting items needed by Pets Alive. They are also planning a spring clean-up at Pets Alive in April. Click on the link below for more information about what the club is doing:
The Circleville Middle School Interact Club has really jumped in and gotten involved this year and Wallkill East couldn't be prouder. Keep it up CVMS Interact!
On November 17, 2015, Wallkill East Rotary presented four new Paul Harris recognitions. Rotarian Sal Lucido, Anne Glenn-Fellenzer (Rotarian spouse), Chris Boyle (Rotarian daughter), and Maureen Plain (Rotarian spouse) are new Paul Harris Fellows in our Wallkill East family.
A person becomes a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) when they donate $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation. Rotarians can become PHF themselves and they can also donate in someone else's name. When you give to the Rotary Foundation, you support Rotary's work around the world through projects that change lives around the world.
Wallkill East Rotary is once again planning its 5K Turkey Trot on Thursday, November 26, 2015. Despite the winter storm the night before last year's event, the 5K event was a great success. "You cannot control Mother Nature, but we still had a great event despite the winter weather. Our Rotary members enjoy seeing people and their families show up to participate in the event together and we appreciate their support," said race organizer Lauren Rowley. The Town of Wallkill based Rotary club raised approximately $8,000 last year that went to support the club's scholarship fund as well as other local organizations including the YMCA of Middletown's Save the Last Lap pool campaign, HONOR Flight, and the Boys & Girls Club. This year's race will start at 8am with registration opening at 6:45am. The course will start and finish near the movie theater entrance to The Galleria at Crystal Run.

Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide. The Wallkill East Rotary Club was chartered in 1989.
Wallkill East Hosts Thanksgiving Morning Turkey Trot
Wallkill East Rotary and the Pine Bush High School Interact Club raised $2,500 to donate to the S.T.E.P program. (Schools To End Poverty) District Governor Nick Constantino put a challenge out to all the clubs in our district to raise $82,000 for S.T.E.P during his governor year. This money will go to adding on to an existing school in Vietnam, the Rose School, which will help to serve over 500 more children.
With the help of our club, the Pine Bush High School Interact Club did a coin drop at Sam's Club in Middletown. Over $850 was raised at this coin drop. Wallkill East matched this amount (and then some!) and our members also contributed to get us to our total $2,500 contribution.
Pictured L to R: Wallkill East Rotary President Carl Bonitz, S.T.E.P Chairman and Co-Founder Howard Goldin, Wallkill East Rotarian Sal Lucido, and and S.T.E.P 1st Vice President and Co-Founder Eddie Frank. You might just think it’s like any other Tuesday throughout the year, but it’s not. Since it’s the first Tuesday in August that means its “National Night Out Against Crime”
A tradition & celebration that started 32 years ago, to bring communities & their local police departments closer together.
The celebration started in the Town of Wallkill 14 years ago, and has gotten bigger and better every year. This year the Rotarians of Wallkill East joined the celebration with over 20 percent of the clubs members volunteering their time and energy!
We helped:
Cook the food
Stuffed the buns (stop laughing)
Serve the food
Clean the tables
Chaperoned the bounce houses
Explained “what is Rotary all about”
Wallkill East Rotary was part of a team of 21 volunteers that served close to 3,000 hotdogs and hamburgers, from 6 to 9:30PM.
This was our first community service project of the 2015-2016, and a very successful start to our club year.
August 2, 2016 – Mark your calendars, “National Night Out Against Crime” 2016!
Come and help support the Wallkill East Rotary Scholarship Fund as well as the
Pine Bush High School Interact Club, Pine Bush Relay for Life and Pine Bush Youth Football!

Wallkill East Turkey Trot Back for Its Second Year
Our District has begun a concerted effort to grow our understanding of our global neighbors through Friendship Exchanges (“FE’s”).
The simplest way to describe a “Friendship Exchange” would be to say “short-term youth exchanges – for adults”. There are four types of FE’s:
The Rotary Peace Fellowship is the premier educational program of The Rotary Foundation and supports Rotary’s mission to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace. It is intended for individuals who have chosen a career related to international relations, peace, and conflict resolution; who have work experience in these areas; and who have a commitment to community or international humanitarian service and working for peace. Applicants should consider these objectives carefully before applying. Two types of fellowships are offered: a master’s degree program and professional development certificate program.

Today I am writing my November letter to you as we all recover from the effects of Sandy. Rotarians all over the Hudson Valley have been impacted by the storm on October 29th. I received a message from two Rotary Clubs, out of our area, asking if they could help. One Club was from Southern Louisiana (District 6200), and the second Club was from Georgia. District 7210 directly helped the communities of Grand Isle and Golden Meadow in Louisiana immediately following Katrina. Those Rotarians were already worrying about us.....

The most recent report I received from The Rotary Foundation shows statistics for the district and club contributions to the Annual Fund. As of February 29, 2012 we contributed $20.47 per capita. We can and we will do better. Sadly, 27 clubs contributed zero dollars and 18 clubs are below the average for the district. So far, there is only one club that satisfies the requirement of being an EREY club - all members contribute at least $25 and per capita contribution exceeds $100...

Rotary International News -- 27 February 2012
The World Health Organization has officially removed India from the list of polio-endemic countries. Ghulam Nabi Azad, India's minister of Health and Family Welfare, made the announcement at the Polio Summit 2012 in New Delhi on 25 February. Azad said that he had been informed of WHO’s action by its director-general, Dr. Margaret Chan.
February is world understanding month. Both Savi and I recall how we felt at the RI Assembly in San Diego last year and I am sure DGE Bill and Sue Bassett must have felt the same this year. Rotary club members worldwide are cautiously celebrating a major milestone in the global effort to eradicate polio. India, until recently an epicenter of the wild poliovirus, has gone one year without recording a new case of the crippling, sometimes fatal, disease.
While the world hopes for peace, Rotary International - a humanitarian service organization dedicated to world peace and understanding - works to make it a reality by training the next generation of peace leaders. Starting in January, the Rotary Clubs of the Mid-Hudson Region will be recruiting for Rotary Peace Fellowship, a program that gives up to 100 fellows the opportunity to obtain professional development certificates or master's degrees in Peace and Conflict Resolution.
Just a reminder: next week's meeting (12/27) will be a round table meeting. We will have our first business meeting of the new year on 1/3/2012. Please plan on attending!
